"A very pleasant stay at the Pipa Old Inn. A very historical building, though the place is equipped with all necessary modern amenities save for an elevator. Fortunately the staff very helpful assisted us with lugging up our heavy luggage to our room on the 3rd floor. Very beautifully decorated and strategically located in the heart of Datong Ancient City. Very pleasant and helpful staff who helped us plan and arrange our trips around Datong though sadly, they weren't very proficient in English (but that's common in China). Free breakfast was included in our stay and there was a decent spread though the menu didn't change much over our stay there save for one or two vegetable dishes being rotated. Overall definitely worth a return trip and stay in Datong Ancient City."

"Two nights at Laochengenguan was absolutely fantastic! First, it was spotless and well-equipped. Second, the breakfast was abundant and delicious, even coming with fruit. Third, the service was truly top-notch; their patience made us feel right at home! (I booked two nights, but needed to switch rooms in between, which shows how popular this place is. However, on the morning of the second day, we were rushing to Hengshan Hanging Temple and completely forgot about the room change. The owner actually called to check if we’d like to move, as the new room was already cleaned. Of course, we happily agreed! This way, it didn't disrupt our sightseeing, and we could rest as soon as we returned! A big thank you to the owner once again! Staying at Laochengenguan is perfect for visiting attractions and shopping."

"Our stay was amazing. The hotel is new, spotless, with all kind of amenities and very stylish. Impeccable attention to detail. But as impressed we were with the hotel the best part is the staff! Liu made us feel at home, she is sweet and adorable, made every effort to accommodate every request, helped us with tours and lent us some bicycles to go around the city. She even organised a take away breakfast for us early in the morning as we were leaving super early!! 11 out of 10! (The cleaning lady was so cute too, going all the way to please us)"

"Sleeping amidst Books and Coffee | The Most Soulful, Healing Hotel I've Ever Stayed In
If the meaning of travel is to discover different landscapes, then staying at this hotel was a wonderful encounter that completely relaxed my mind and body.
🌿 When a Hotel Meets a Bookstore, Ideal Living Becomes Reality
From the moment I walked through the door, I was captivated. The first floor features an open-plan coffee and book bar, with an entire wall of books exuding the delicate scent of paper and ink. Guests are welcome to browse freely. In the afternoon, ordering a pour-over coffee and settling into a soft sofa with a book, with sunlight streaming through the glass windows, it felt as if time itself had slowed down. This isn't just a hotel lobby; it's clearly the study of my dreams!
🛏️ Impeccable Details, Beyond Expectations
The room's design continues the overall artistic and literary aesthetic. Wooden furniture, warm lighting, and thoughtfully displayed local characteristics and surrounding information reveal the owner's excellent taste. The bedding was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a sound night's sleep. Even more surprisingly, the soundproofing in the room was exceptional. There was no need to worry about being disturbed by the sounds from the book bar or the street, truly achieving a peaceful oasis amidst the hustle and bustle.
💖 Thoughtful Service, as Warm as Coming Home
The front desk lady had a sweet smile and proactively introduced the hotel's features and nearby dining options during check-in. Any questions I had were answered promptly, which made me feel very much at ease.
This stay completely exceeded my expectations. It's not just a place to rest your feet, but a healing space where one can slow down and enjoy a moment of tranquility. I highly recommend it to all book lovers, coffee enthusiasts, and friends who appreciate aesthetics! The next time I visit this city, this will definitely be my top choice."

"Everything was ok. Room was clean, with nice views and as depicted in the web. Staff is kind and helpful. You can ask them for advice to visit the main hotpots in Datong. But bear in mind that this is an b&b with no proper reception desk. You need to contact the property in advance, or go to the liquor shop next door otherwise. The hotel does not provide real towels but disposable towels (made of paper)."

"A truly wonderful stay! I absolutely adored the traditional courtyard house. The owner's meticulous attention to detail was evident in the decor, with all the furniture crafted from genuine solid mahogany. The room amenities gave a very homely feel, featuring a solid wood bed, wardrobe, table and chairs, and a daybed. The toilet and shower were separate, and it even had a smart toilet. Everything was impeccably clean. Breakfast was fantastic! We received an incredibly warm welcome, making us feel like family."

"While the hardware is truly impressive, the 'soft' services really fall short.
**Facilities:** The decor is bright and luxurious, with crystal chandeliers adorning the lobby and rooms. Numerous mirrors are used to create a sense of spaciousness. The rooms are generously sized, and the 1.5-meter wide double beds are very comfortable.
**Cleanliness:** Perhaps because the summer holidays had just ended and the room hadn't been occupied for some time, the phone and desk were quite dusty. I had to clean them myself with wet wipes.
**Service:** The front desk and in-room service were quite good. Slippers, extra pillows, and drinking water were promptly delivered upon request. When we returned late from the Yungang Grottoes, the front desk kindly extended our check-out time.
However, upon arriving at the hotel, as I was taking my luggage out of the taxi, the staff member at the entrance simply stood by, expressionless, watching me. After checking in at the front desk, I asked if my luggage could be sent to my room, only to be told to find a bellhop myself.
As one of Datong's premier hotels, the hardware is undeniably grand. However, staying here leaves you with the distinct impression that while its facade is resplendent, the internal service ethos is rather perfunctory, embodying a 'do as little as possible' and 'if it can be ignored, ignore it' mentality."

"Nanshe surprised us pleasantly in many ways. First the owner of the homestay came personally to pick us up from the high speed rail station and did an introduction of the Datong old city on the way to the homestay. She is very friendly and took great care of us throughout the 3 days we stayed with them. The caretaker of the homestay is also a gem. She took care of all our outbound travels from Datong and even helped to coordinate the courier of my left-behind charger from the previous hotel in Beijing. When we had to leave early for outbound tours, they even packed breakfast for us to take with us. So a big kudos to the Nanshe premium stay and their top notch staff for making our stay in Datong such an enjoyable one. We will be back again!"

"Staying at the Jianguo Hotel in Datong was incredibly comfortable, truly living up to its reputation as a classic, well-established hotel. The rooms, cleanliness, and service were all exceptional. During our stay, we received two complimentary bathhouse vouchers, allowing us to enjoy a five-star bathing experience. The service auntie there was incredibly attentive, even squeezing toothpaste onto our toothbrushes and handing them to us. The scrubbing auntie was professional and thorough, with skillful techniques, and even recommended some local Datong specialties. The hotel's service was a huge help to us.
The hotel breakfast was rich and delicious, featuring local Datong snacks. We ate our fill every morning. The breakfast service auntie cleared tables promptly and was very observant and thoughtful, making us feel right at home.
To our surprise, the hotel even offers a free shuttle service to the Yungang Grottoes, which was incredibly convenient for guests.
There was also a 'green channel' that allowed me to dine at Fenglin Pavilion, which is usually very difficult to get a reservation for.
This trip to Datong left me with no regrets."

The ancient capital of China, Datong in the world, opens up the heavy historical scroll of Shanxi, and Pingcheng Datong is eye-catching. Pingchengfu is located in the courtyard of No. 34, No. 36 and No. 38, Lihuaijiao, Southeast City Historical and Cultural Street in Datong City. Its location is the location of the Imperial Temple and the Altar of the Soochow of the Northern Wei Dynasty during the Pingcheng period, and it was the core area of the ritual system of the Northern Wei Dynasty at that time. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, it gradually became a residential block, and the traditional courtyard pattern has been retained to this day. Dongnanyi Historical and Cultural District is a key cultural and tourism development project in Datong City. It takes the construction concept of "inheriting historical context and retaining the atmosphere of the city". It took five years of restoration and reconstruction through protection, renovation, and repair. It was opened in 2023. The hotel's courtyard No. 38 is one of the reconstructed projects and is a representative traditional house in Southeast City. The historical brilliance of the ancient city streets and alleys has also brought new vitality and texture to the ancient city. First, let us understand the historical origin of Pingcheng Fu. Datong was called Pingcheng in ancient times. The Northern Wei Dynasty was established about 96 years (398-494), and this period was called the "Pingcheng Era". It is the center of politics, economy, religion and culture in northern China in the 4th to 5th centuries. Pingcheng Fu Hotel was grandly opened on July 21, 2025 and was released under this name, returning to the true nature of history and restoring the prosperous era of Pingcheng. There are three courtyards in the hotel, namely: Xuanpuyuan, Kusheju and Sangzhefang; there are 17 rooms in the hotel, all named after the Pingcheng period of the Northern Wei Dynasty, namely: Taihe, Dengguo, Tianxing, Tianci, Yongxing, Shenrui, Taiyan, Shiguang, Yanhe, Zhengping, Chengping, Tai'an, Xing'an, Tian'an, Xingguang, Heping, Huangxing, and Tian'an. The hotel relies on the cultural heritage of the three generations of Beijing and the important towns of the two dynasties to comprehensively enhance the value of the ancient city.
Location: Pingcheng Fu is located in the southeast art district of Datong Ancient City. Walking distance to Huayan Temple, Jiulongbi, Daiwang Mansion, and Shanhua Temple. It takes 30 minutes to reach Yungang Grottoes and about 1.5 hours to reach Hanging Temple. It takes about 15 minutes to reach Datong South Station and about 30 minutes to reach Yungang International Airport.

As soon as I entered the door, I was amazed by the design style of the homestay. The original wood color is matched with warm yellow lights, which is warm and high-end. The facilities in the room are very new, the bedding is soft and skin-friendly, lying on it is like being wrapped in clouds, and you have a good night's sleep! The details are carefully reflected everywhere, and the stay is particularly comfortable. The location of the hotel is very convenient to various scenic spots. The housekeeper service is considerate, and problems are solved in time. What is more worthy of praise is the soft towel on the washbasin. A large bag is completely enough for the family to use, and there is also a special baby wet toilet paper. The details are very in place. When I encountered rainy days during the trip, the itinerary plan was temporarily cancelled. Hiding in the yard to listen to the rain and drink tea has a unique style of being hidden in the city.
We arrived at 7pm. The waiter Xiao Zheng warmly received us and instructed us how to take the elevator to the room. In the evening, he also considerately sent us a bowl of longevity noodles. The baby is a big kid, and the shoes provided by the hotel are a bit small. That night, the housekeeper was very enthusiastic to find a pair of suitable slippers for us. The hotel did not have a refrigerator, and the housekeeper brought ice. We always felt that this service was what a resort hotel should have. Because we predicted that the hot spring would be changed that night, we decided to take a hot spring bath the next day. To be honest, the facilities are lacking, and the hot spring water is not live water, and there is no filtration. It started at 9 o'clock, and we went to soak before 10 o'clock. There were already some stratum corneum. The pavilion was filled with new water, but it also needed to be cooled down before we could go. In short, the hot spring facilities need to be improved. In addition, I want to say about smoking control. I hope the service staff can stop guests from smoking in the indoor hot spring area. There are many children, which is very inappropriate.
The environment is quite nice, and the service is attentive.

MM779007****The most surprising thing about this trip was choosing this B&B! The boss is very enthusiastic. He took the initiative to contact us before check-in and informed us of the route and surrounding tips in detail. When we arrived, he personally greeted us at the door, helped us carry our luggage upstairs, and introduced the local characteristics and hidden attractions along the way like a friend. The next morning, she personally cooked a hot breakfast for us and even planned our transportation. She truly met our every request!
The B&B environment is impeccable! The room is clean and tidy, the decoration style is warm and tasteful, and the bedding is so soft that it feels like sleeping on a cloud. The most surprising thing is the small garden in the yard, which is surrounded by green plants and has a swing chair. It is very healing to sit and watch the stars at night. The bathroom is fully equipped with supplies, even moisturizing body lotion is thoughtfully prepared, perfect details!
Living here is like living at home. I highly recommend it to friends who want to experience a human touch when traveling! I will definitely stay here next time~

2208363****This B&B is incredibly popular! It has five-star decor, five-star service, and four-star pricing. The location is fantastic, next to the Four Archways, across from the Dai Palace, and a seven- to eight-minute walk from Huayan Temple. Two excellent noodle shops are just outside the door, and the B&B has a breakfast contract with them, offering a variety of set menus. For us southerners, the portions are plentiful and we can't finish them all. The B&B has a small courtyard where you can sit and sip tea or write, which is quite comfortable. The housekeepers were very attentive and even helped us check out late when we left. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in Datong and highly recommend it to friends. The only downside is that the smart speaker is a bit annoying, and I became the target of teasing from my children. I also recommend that the laundry room be equipped with disinfectant.

MM718060****It truly started with its beautiful appearance and ended with its excellent quality. Initially, I was looking at hotels like Ji Hotel and Xingcheng Hotel, all priced around 700-800 RMB. After repeatedly booking and canceling, guesthouses gradually came into my consideration. After reviewing hotel photos and prices, I decisively chose Huazhu. First, the facilities: the hotel provides disposable, fully sealed kettles, a smart speaker, disposable toilet seat covers, a smart toilet, a large showerhead, and non-slip flooring – smart and comfortable. Second, the environment: the hotel is located in the guesthouse area behind the Prince Dai's Mansion, making parking and sightseeing very convenient. The interior: the three-story hotel has a very photogenic interior, with a fish pond, a billiards area, a tea room, and an elevator. Third, the service: the receptionist was warm and attentive, asking about my arrival time and breakfast time upon arrival, and even giving me a gift bag upon departure. Fourth, the breakfast: the breakfast was nutritionally balanced, and the cook's skills were superb; the handmade noodles were particularly amazing.

GGuest UserI had the most beautiful time in Datong, and a big part of that was due to my stay at Renyi Inn! First of all, the host is so kind and friendly. She always greets you with a smile. She even brought fresh watermelon for free everyday to my room :) more importantly, the whole hotel as well as the room we're super clean. The interior was so beautifully traditional. And it's only a 3min walk away from the major temple and all the main shopping streets. If you stay in Datong (which you definitely should, it has so much to offer), stay at Renyi Inn!

GGuest UserThe location is right at the center of the city. If you drive your own car, it might be challenging to live here as it's too central and always have traffic jam nearby. But if you are not driving then it's the perfect location. Many restaurants nearby, and a bakery right at the corner. there's also a cafe not far away, you can easily get coffee in the morning.
Room is big enough for two persons. Some rooms are facing the main street, it's might getting noisy in the morning. If you mind this, make sure to send email to them in advance to check if your room is facing street...

GGuest UserThe location is superb, right within the ancient city. For those driving, parking is available at the Nine Dragon Wall parking lot, just a 100-meter walk away. Despite being in a tourist area, it offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. Guandi Temple is also conveniently located nearby. The service was excellent, and breakfast was quite good too. Both the owner and the staff were incredibly warm and welcoming. Although the May Day holiday prices were significantly higher than usual, the convenience made it completely worthwhile. Highly recommended!

GGuest UserI was greeted with a fruit platter during check-in, which was a wonderful welcome gesture considering I left my home about 24 hours earlier, traveling non-stop from California to Datong, China. The Inn provides a wonderful experience for the first-time foreign visitor. The interior decor has that Chinese charm consisting of artwork, a book display, an aquarium with an auspicious collection of 8 large fishes (carp, I think), in-room tea set with an on-table electric stove, which would be unique to most Westerners. The glass flooring adds an extraordinary appeal since I have never experienced that in a hotel before, and I have traveled to dozens of countries.
The Inn is well located, a short bus ride to Datong Railway Station (for non-high-speed rail travel)*, and a short taxi ride to Datong South Railway Station (for high-speed rail travel)**. It is just next to Datong City Wall. You can walk along the top of the City Wall at no cost. A 10-20 minute walk takes you to nearly all the attractions within the ancient City Wall. Here you will also find a variety of restaurants serving local food as well as souvenir shops. There is also a small shop that sells sundry items including drinks (beer included) within a 5-minute walk from the Inn. Across from this sundry shop, is a shop that specializes in ancient Chinese clothing (Hanfu dress). They can dress you up, cosmetics included.
The Inn provides directions to Yujian Yun Gang - a popular destination for travelers to Datong. Here you will see ancient Buddhist cave art, including large and tall (several stories tall) sculptures. It takes two bus rides to get there, 1RMB per ride.
My booking choice was for either a guest room on the 1st or 2nd floor but was assigned a wonderful 2nd-floor guest room.
The owners of the Inn were exceptionally friendly. I met both the mother and her daughter. My room was professionally cleaned and provided with drinking bottled water daily.
If I return to Datong in the future, I will certainly book a room at this Inn.

黄黄善博The hotel was the priciest that we stayed at during our 45 days in China, though the beds, space, and bathroom were the nicest out of them all. For the price, I would’ve hoped that the staff would’ve been a bit more helpful—no elevator and many bags to carry up the three flights of stairs was really quite difficult. The staff also don’t speak any English at all, and my friend doesn’t speak any Chinese, and we didn’t really understand that you needed to put down a deposit of 100rmb that would then be refunded to you (or that they needed a Chinese phone number too; I didn’t have one, and as a foreigner traveling through China, if I had been by myself or didn’t know or have any Chinese friends with Chinese numbers, I would’ve been unable to check-in).
The hotel was very nice nonetheless. Fantastic location, very close to everything. The walk to the old city wall took about an hour, and would’ve been a ten minute taxi ride. The street the hotel is located on is full of lots of local shops and restaurants, and feels very lively during the day. The staff was also very friendly and enjoyed speaking with the foreigner at the hotel (although I had some trouble understanding the Shanxi accent! Jin Chinese is not my strongest!).
The WiFi was a bit slow. But the beds were incredible. Huge, clean, soft. Pillows were lovely. Bathroom was huge. Just wish there’d been a bit more service from the front desk. Was a tad weird to get up at 5:50am to go to the Hanging Temple 悬空寺, which is very normal, to see the woman at the front desk asleep… it was fine, but still a bit weird.
